Cortlandt Rowing (CCRA) Fall Youth Program

IMPORTANT NOTE: Youth Fall registration deadline is September 10th (for new rowers)

A coached rowing program for youth to learn all aspects of the sport and prepare for competitive races. There’s a place on the team for everyone. Rowing is a sport for everyone! Develops teamwork, fitness, coordination and leadership skills.

Youth Program Fee $410 Per Returning (Experienced) Youth Rower; $350 Per New (Novice) Youth Rower

You must be a current member of US Rowing in order to participate in CCRA activities. Please refer to our Registration Form & Payments section of this page for more information.

Curriculum

  • Learn to row basic stroke, using Concept 2 Rowing Machines and on the water rowing
  • Water safety, including safety video
  • Learn the parts of the boat and basic commands
  • Learn safe entry and exit from boat
  • Sweep and Scull rowing in different boat configurations
  • Team drills to refine technical stroke skills
  • Strength training
  • Practice to become a competitive rower
  • Attend local regattas as a team
  • A sport for everyone! If your strength is not in rowing, we will train you to lead rowers as a Coxswain, and develop your leadership skills.

Practice Schedule

Novice (New) Youth Rowers

  • Sept 4, 11, 18
    • Thursdays, 5pm – 7pm, at Lake Meahagh
  • Starting Sept 21
    • Sundays, 9:30am – 11:30am, Location TBA, but intended to be held at the Hudson River location (weather permitting)
  • Starting Sept 22 (join the experienced rowers!)
    • Monday through Wednesday, 5pm – 7pm, at Lake Meahagh

Experienced (Returning) Youth Rowers

  • Monday through Wednesday, 5pm – 7pm, at Lake Meahagh (Starting Sep 8)
  • Experienced youth rowers are encouraged to assist new Novice rowers on the three Thursdays listed above.
  • Sundays, 9:30am – 11:30am, Location TBA, but intended to be held at the Hudson River location (weather permitting)

Safety / Health

  • Swim test requirements: Swim 50 meters, tread water for 10 minutes, put on a PFD (lifejacket) while treading water. This is for your safety.
    • New team members must pass this test in their first season.
    • Current team members must pass this test within the last 12 months.
    • Fall season swim test date/location is TBA.
  • USRowing requires all club members 18 years of age and older, coaches and volunteers to complete SafeSport training, creating a safer sports culture for all athletes. Please log in to your US Rowing account to complete your training. For more info, see the US Rowing’s SafeSport webpage.

Racing

Racing will be available for rowers that meet the coach’s criteria (attendance, coachability, effort, experience/skill level, etc.). For an example of what determines who races, see this document (credit: Mercer Rowing).

Races we’re planning to attend this season (details are tentative, and subject to change). Additional race fees are due at the time of race signup (approximately 2-4 weeks prior to the regatta), and are non-refundable. Exact race fees are TBA, but fee ranges are listed here:

  • Head of the Hudson, Sunday, Sept 21: Albany, NY. Race fee: $40-$60
  • Poughkeepsie Regatta, Saturday, October 4: Poughkeepsie, NY. Race fee: $30-$50
  • Head of the Schuylkill, Sunday, Oct 26: Philadelphia, PA. Race fee: $100-$150

Communications

  • Mandatory Parent meeting: Date and time TBA
  • Our coaches use the SportsYou App to communicate quickly regarding any updates needed for practices including important change in plans due to weather. Please download and register on the SportsYou App. All new registered rowers will receive an invitation to join the ‘Cortlandt Community Rowing Youth’ team.
  • Please follow Cortlandt Rowing on Facebook and Instagram. The number of followers counts when we want to show how quickly our club is growing here in our local communities!
