2026 Spring Novice Masters (Adult)

Cortlandt Rowing (CCRA) Spring Novice (‘Beginner’) Masters Programs

IMPORTANT NOTE: Adult Spring registration deadline is March 23rd!

For adults who are brand new to rowing or just started with CCRA in the past year.

You must be a current member of US Rowing, and sign their online waiver, in order to participate in CCRA activities. Please refer to our Registration Form & Payments section of this page for more information.

In addition to on-water instruction, the Spring Masters Program includes the following:

  • Row2Music sessions (drop-in, indoor erg program, Mondays, 6:45-8pm)
  • Independent erging/weight training at our indoor location
    • All spring masters will have access to our indoor facility (ergs and weight equipment), arranged on participant basis
  • Independent Zoom erg sessions with a buddy
    • All spring masters will have access to the CCRA Masters Zoom meeting ID, so they can erg remotely with their CCRA buddies at their convenience (for those who have an erg at home).

Program Schedule and Features

Before On-Water Activities Start

All at the indoor location 210 6th St, Verplanck, NY

  • Wednesdays, 6:45pm-8:15pm: Higher intensity rowing to build endurance and speed
  • Saturdays, 7:00am-9:00am: The focus is on overall wellness: skill building, strength training, mobility, balance work, fitness, and improving rowing technique on the erg
  • Sundays, 7:00am-9:00am: focus on technique to increase speed and power on the erg

When On-Water Activities Start

Approximately early/mid April, all at Lake Meahagh

  • Saturdays, 9:00am-11:00am
    • Learn how to row on the water at Lake Meahagh!
    • These beginner sessions will teach you basic on-water rowing skills on a shallow and protected lake: a perfect place to learn!
    • Coached sessions will focus mainly on team boat rowing (4 or 8 rowers plus coxswain)
    • Water safety, including safety video
    • Learn the parts of the boat and basic commands
    • Learn safe entry and exit from boat
    • Team drills to refine technical stroke skills

Adult Novice Masters practices will take place at Lake Meahagh Park, Westchester Avenue near 8th Street, Verplanck. Practices will be held rain or shine, unless there is a safety concern. In the event of unfavorable rowing conditions, practices will take place indoors at our 6th St location, and will be announced on SportsYou.

Safety / Health

  • Swim test requirements: Swim 50 meters, tread water for 10 minutes, put on a PFD (lifejacket) while treading water. This is for your safety.
    • New masters must pass this test in their first season.
    • Current masters must pass this test within the last 12 months.
    • Spring Season Swim Test: date/location is TBA.
  • All Masters must abide by CCRA Safety requirements, and watch the US Rowing Safety video every year before attending the spring session. See the Safety Requirements page.

Special Rowing Event

Indoor Rowing Tank Session

March 14 (Saturday), 12:15pm – 3:15pm, West Point Caufield Boathouse.

Practice rowing with real oars in real water, indoors at the tanks at the West Point boathouse! This special event will be open to all CCRA Spring Members, Adult Masters, and Youth Rowers – tank time will be split, alternating with erg work.

$15 non-refundable fee due by March 12.

Communications

  • Our coaches use the SportsYou App App to communicate quickly regarding any updates needed for practices including important change in plans due to weather. Please download and register on the SportsYou App. All registered Masters will receive an invitation to join the CCRA Masters SportsYou “team.”
  • Join our Masters Facebook Community by clicking here and request to “Join group.”
  • Please follow Cortlandt Rowing on Facebook and Instagram. The number of followers counts when we want to show how quickly our club is growing here in our local communities!

You must be a current member of US Rowing in order to participate in CCRA activities. The club code for CCRA is EAYKZ (all upper case). Follow US Rowing registration instructions here.
