Cortlandt Rowing (CCRA) Spring Youth Program

IMPORTANT NOTE: Youth Spring registration deadline is March 18!

A coached rowing program for youth to learn all aspects of the sport and prepare for competitive races. There’s a place on the team for everyone. Rowing is a sport for everyone! Develops teamwork, fitness, coordination and leadership skills.

Curriculum

  • Learn to row basic stroke, using Concept 2 Rowing Machines and on the water rowing
  • Water safety, including safety video
  • Learn the parts of the boat and basic commands
  • Learn safe entry and exit from boat
  • Sweep and Scull rowing in different boat configurations
  • Team drills to refine technical stroke skills
  • Strength training
  • Practice to become a competitive rower
  • Attend local scholastic regattas as a team
  • A sport for everyone! If your strength is not in rowing, we will train you to lead rowers as a Coxswain, and develop your leadership skills.

Practice Schedule

Until on-water conditions are consistently favorable (Feb 26 through approx late March):

  • Monday through Thursday, 5-6:30pm: Land-based, erging (rowing machines), strength and conditioning program indoors at our indoor location (210 6th St, Verplanck, NY)

When on-water conditions allow (approx late March through June 3):

  • Monday through Thursday, 5-7pm, at Lake Meahagh. Rain or shine, but move indoors if weather/water conditions are unfavorable that day.
  • Additional practices for NYS Championships possible (Fridays and/or weekends)

IMPORTANT NOTICE: There will be no practice from April 1 – 5.

Safety / Health

  • Swim test requirements: Swim 50 meters, tread water for 10 minutes, put on a PFD (lifejacket) while treading water. This is for your safety.
    • New team members must pass this test in their first season.
    • Current team members must pass this test within the last 12 months.
    • Spring season swim test: Mon, March 4, 5-6:30pm. Premier Athletic (Montrose)
  • US Rowing requires all club members 18 years of age and older, coaches and volunteers to complete SafeSport training, creating a safer sports culture for all athletes. Please log in to your US Rowing account to complete your training. For more info, see the US Rowing’s SafeSport webpage.

Racing

Erg competitions and on-water racing will be available for rowers that meet the coach’s criteria (attendance, coachability, effort, experience/skill level, etc.). For an example of what determines who races, see this document (credit: Mercer Rowing).

Races we’re planning to attend this season (details are tentative, and subject to change):

  • Erg Race: March 16 (Saturday), Newburgh
  • NYS Championships: May 11-12, Saratoga Springs. Additional seat fee: $75. Only high performing, coach-selected athletes will race.
  • Orange/Rockland/Ulster/Westchester Cup: May 18 (Saturday), Rockland Lake (tentative)
  • Novice Championship: May 19 (Sunday), Rockland Lake
  • HVRL Championship: June 1 (Saturday), Poughkeepsie.
  • Miles of Hope Regatta: June 2 (Sunday), Poughkeepsie

Events

  • Cox Clinic at HRRA: March 10 (Sunday), 1-3pm, Poughkeepsie. $5 fee. Sign up here.
  • Parent Meeting: TBA

Communications

  • Our coaches use the SportsYou App to communicate quickly regarding any updates needed for practices including important change in plans due to weather. Please download and register on the SportsYou App. All new registered rowers will receive an invitation to join the ‘Cortlandt Community Rowing Youth’ team.
  • Please follow Cortlandt Rowing on Facebook and Instagram. The number of followers counts when we want to show how quickly our club is growing here in our local communities!

Registration Form

You must be a current member of US Rowing in order to participate in CCRA activities. The club code for CCRA is EAYKZ (all upper case). Follow US Rowing registration instructions here.

We accept Venmo or credit/debit card payments online via PayPal Checkout. To pay online, please fill in the rower’s first and last name below and add to cart. You will then be led to the checkout screen.

Note: there is a $10 fee for online payments.
