Cortlandt Rowing (CCRA) Spring Youth Program

IMPORTANT NOTE: Youth Spring registration deadline is March 25th!

A coached rowing program for youth to learn all aspects of the sport and prepare for competitive races. There’s a place on the team for everyone. Rowing is a sport for everyone! Develops teamwork, fitness, coordination and leadership skills.

Curriculum

  • Learn to row basic stroke, using Concept 2 Rowing Machines and on the water rowing
  • Water safety, including safety video
  • Learn the parts of the boat and basic commands
  • Learn safe entry and exit from boat
  • Sweep and Scull rowing in different boat configurations
  • Team drills to refine technical stroke skills
  • Strength training
  • Practice to become a competitive rower
  • Attend local scholastic regattas as a team
  • A sport for everyone! If your strength is not in rowing, we will train you to lead rowers as a Coxswain, and develop your leadership skills.

Practice Schedule

Before On-Water Activities Start

All at the indoor location 210 6th St, Verplanck, NY

Land-based, erging (rowing machines), strength and conditioning program.

  • Mondays, Wednesdays, 5pm-6:30pm
  • Tuesdays, Thursdays, 5pm-6:30pm

When On-Water Activities Start

Approximately early/mid April, all at Lake Meahagh

  • Monday through Thursday, 5pm-7pm: Rain or shine, but we may move indoors if the weather/water conditions are unfavorable that day.
  • Sunday, 9:30am-11:30am: Rain or shine, but we may move indoors if the weather/water conditions are unfavorable that day.
  • Novice (beginner) Youth Rowers:
    • Sundays, 11:30am-1:30pm (experienced rowers encouraged to stay and help)

Important Notice: There will be no practice 3/30 – 4/5, and 5/25.

Safety / Health

  • Swim test requirements: Swim 50 meters, tread water for 10 minutes, put on a PFD (lifejacket) while treading water. This is for your safety.
    • New team members must pass this test in their first season.
    • Current team members must pass this test within the last 12 months.
    • Spring season swim test: Date/Location TBA.
  • US Rowing requires all club members 18 years of age and older, coaches and volunteers to complete SafeSport training, creating a safer sports culture for all athletes. Please log in to your US Rowing account to complete your training. For more info, see the US Rowing’s SafeSport webpage.

Special Rowing Event

Indoor Rowing Tank Session

March 14 (Saturday), 12:15pm – 3:15pm, West Point Caufield Boathouse.

Practice rowing with real oars in real water, indoors at the tanks at the West Point boathouse! This special event will be open to all CCRA Spring Members, Adult Masters, and Youth Rowers – tank time will be split, alternating with erg work.

$15 non-refundable fee due by March 12.

Racing

(tentative schedule)

Erg competitions and on-water racing will be available for rowers that meet the coach’s criteria (attendance, coachability, effort, experience/skill level, etc.). For an example of what determines who races, see this document (credit: Mercer Rowing).

Races we’re planning to attend this season include (details are tentative, and subject to change):

Novice Youth Rowers

  • March 21 (Saturday), 6am: Erg Race, Newburgh, NY. Small participant fee required, TBD.
  • * May 2 (Saturday), 6am: Triangulars Race, Poughkeepsie, NY.
  • * May 17 (Sunday), 6am: Novice Regatta, Rockland Lake, Valley Cottage, NY.

* At coach’s discretion – we may or may not attend these novice races.

Experienced Youth Rowers

  • March 21 (Saturday), 6am: Erg Race, Newburgh, NY. Small participant fee required, TBD.
  • April 25 (Saturday), 6am: WARS Race, Poughkeepsie, NY.
  • May 3 (Sunday), 6am: Triangulars Race, Poughkeepsie, NY.
  • May 9-10 (Saturday-Sunday): NYS High School Championships, Saratoga NY. Additional fee, approximately $100-$150.
  • May 30 (Saturday), 6am: HVRL League Championship, Poughkeepsie, NY.
  • June 7 (Sunday), 6am: Miles of Hope, Poughkeepsie, NY.

Communications

  • Our coaches use the SportsYou App to communicate quickly regarding any updates needed for practices including important change in plans due to weather. Please download and register on the SportsYou App. All new registered rowers will receive an invitation to join the ‘Cortlandt Community Rowing Youth’ team.
  • Please follow Cortlandt Rowing on Facebook and Instagram. The number of followers counts when we want to show how quickly our club is growing here in our local communities!

You must be a current member of US Rowing in order to participate in CCRA activities. The club code for CCRA is EAYKZ (all upper case). Follow US Rowing registration instructions here.
